More detail on this project

222 Clarence Street

222 Clarence Street

Client: Jones Lang LaSalle
Project Engineer: Nicholas Joannides

This 9-storey brick and stone building had timber floors and a forest of timber columns, quite unsuited for today’s office requirements. Facades were completely retained, while a new concrete building with a lift core and just a few concrete columns constructed internally. To save costs the existing timber floors were used as formwork.

Partridge Partners understood that the new work would move due to elastic shortening creep, and concrete shrinkage, but the old facade was dimensionally very stable. We designed special steel brackets to allow for vertical and horizontal movement, whilst providing lateral and in-plane restraint.

Hotel & Retail Complex, Bondi Beach

Hotel & Retail Complex, Bondi Beach

Project Engineer:  Nicholas Joannides

Known sometimes as "Ramada Bondi Hotel". This was a large project of $200m. The post-tensioned floors were a D & C package and Partridge Partners designed all vertical and load-bearing elements, using the unusual technique (preferred by the Builder) of spray concrete against single-sided formwork for all walls, beams and columns.

8-storey Office Building, Canberra

8-storey Office Building, Canberra

Northbourne Avenue Headquarters for the Federal Police. This building consisted of two smaller building, joined centrally by the core and atrium. A 3-D computer model of wind loading enabled an economic design, balancing the varying stiffnesses of the structure.

6-storey Office, The Rocks, Sydney

6-storey Office, The Rocks, Sydney

Originally Immigration House in Cumberland Street.

10-storey Office Building, Clarence Street, Sydney

10-storey Office Building, Clarence Street, Sydney

This design retained the original sandstone/brick facades and constructed a new concrete building inside, utilising the timber floors for formwork.

Partridge Partners understood that the new work would move due to elastic shortening creep, and concrete shrinkage, but the old facade was dimensionally very stable. We designed special steel brackets to allow for vertical and horizontal movement, whilst providing lateral and in-plane restraint.

20,000 sq m Warehouse, Regents Park

20,000 sq m Warehouse, Regents Park

Client:  State Superannuation Board

This commission for the State Superannuation Board was to design one of the largest single roof sheds in the southern hemisphere.  Careful wind calculations using University Research rather than simply following the Code formulae led to substantive cost savings in purlin and roof steel weight.

Baltimore Aircoil Factory, Gosford

Baltimore Aircoil Factory, Gosford

This double-portal factory complex had 4 overhead travelling 10T gantry cranes.  Our careful analysis of the logic of factory usage, lifting positions and travel lengths allowed a more rational crane operational layout, resulting in significantly reduced steel costs.  This project demonstrates Partridge Partners' ability to think outside normal discipline boundaries to achieve a better overall outcome for our clients.

Fertiliser Storage Shed, Fiji

Fertiliser Storage Shed, Fiji

Project Engineer:  Harry Partridge

The very high bulk storage loads on a reclaimed area of deep marine ooze required costing of a range of innovative foundation systems to give the best cost/performance balance.  The final solution was based on an interactive raft/pile solution developed by working in close association with the geotechnical engineer.

Leigh Mardon Printing, Factory & Warehouse

Leigh Mardon Printing, Factory & Warehouse

The total floor area of this facility was 27,000m2.  The 25m high-rise storage section used large external steel props to reduce wind deflection and so increase effective storage.  The Project Manager, John Woodford said "This unique and innovative solution saved over $200,000".

6-storey Office, Gladesville

6-storey Office, Gladesville

This was a Consulere development for Sydney head office; situated at the top of the hill at Gladesville, it is a distinctive building with its stepped, pink facade.

Tank Support Systems for Tema Multotec Pty Ltd

Design and certification of steel support structures for filter tanks (for wind and earthquake loading) at over 30 locations in Australia, Fiji and Torres Strait Islands.

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Mascot

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Mascot

Departure lounge and retail shopping arcade modifications and upgrades.

"Imax" Cinema, Katoomba

The cinema houses one of Australia's largest cinema screens and as the building is adjacent to residential areas, the acoustic material loads were very high requiring large member portal frames.

Rubber Compounding Building, Liverpool

This was a heavily-loaded 20m high steel-framed tower warehouse for rubber production for MM Cables and also the design and documentation of the associated materials handling support structure and administration offices.

5-storey Office, George Street, Sydney

Standard office construction in Chinatown, where economic design was the main driver.  Very poor footing material was encountered requiring lateral thinking and close work with the builder.

6 Self-storage Facilities, Various Sydney Sites

The controlling design imperative of these new and refurbished structures was cost, and many innovative ideas were implemented with the client's (Miller’s Self-Storage) encouragement – most successfully but some were pushed too far and small serviceability problems arose.  These were then discarded.  The overall result was to produce very cost-efficient and functional buildings.

Cronulla Cinema

Cronulla Cinema

A modern twin-cinema complex with restaurant, shops and bars, retaining the original brick facade and incorporating it into the final design.

Royal National Park

Structural design of upgrade of Headquarters building; feasibility studies and upgrade of old timber visitors’ centre near Audley Weir.

New Manufacturing Facility, Wetherill Street, Silverwater

The design of a new manufacturing and storage facility for Vittoria Coffee.  The design of tilt-up pre-cast panels and structural steel support systems and roofs.

Cold Storage and Processing, Factory, Ingleburn

The design of a new cold storage and processing facility utilising the cold room walls to form the external walls of the factory, saving the client construction time and money.

Plastic Sheeting & Printing Production, Warehouse & Office, Chester Hill

The design and documentation of a factory for the production of printed plastic sheeting products, and also the provision of a high bay raking storage warehouse and an attached office building, with associated roadways and car parking.

Pacific Private Hospital, Brighton-Le-Sands

This was a difficult case of extensive alterations and additions to a busy private hospital.  Close co-operation and co-ordination of the consultant and building teams during both design and construction phase was essential in order to keep all services (including delicate hip operations) functioning throughout the works.

Inline Container Bottling Factory, Warehouse & Office, Wetherill Park

This was a production factory for liquid and dry container bottling, including the design of storage tanks and mixing equipment, warehouse raking storage and an office.

8-storey Office, Milsons Point

The top 2 floors are residential, middle 4 floors are offices and lower floors carpark.  The upper floors were post-tensioned.
