'The Poise'

'The Poise'

Artist:  Warren Langley
Project Engineer:  Peter Standen

This project needed very close cooperation between the artist and Partridge Partners.  The artist had produced the model and concept and also wished to construct it.  This required us to analyse the structure and design the member sizes, help with the glazing fixings and lighting attachments and to also provide the complex geometry of a skewed parabolic volume so that cutting and welding of the stainless steel could be achieved simply and economically.

Australian Chinese Ex-Servicemen Monument, Dixon Street, Sydney

Architect:  Peter McGregor
Engineer:  Harry Partridge

The monument, located on the corner of Dixon and Liverpool streets near Chinatown, is the first of its kind. It honours the 500 Chinese Australians who served in every arm of the forces, in every one of the wars of the twentieth century in which Australia was engaged. This monument comprises a 10-metre high sculpture with 380 light rods that spiral around a column. The structure symbolises water and the Chinese belief that relationships of reciprocity do not end with death. It is absolutely beautiful.
